" I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned, and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to
prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed. I feel at this moment more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of war"

-- Abraham Lincoln (Nov. 21, 1864 letter to Col. William F. Elkins)

My understanding from reading something of post-civil-war History is that there was indeed, a quite a bit of corruption following the civil war. It lasted into the 1870's, and resulted in a quite a few scandals at that time. Someone who is more of a historian can confirm or refute this, but that is my understanding. The parallels are indeed sinsiter.

From what I've gathered, it was a series of scandalous conspiracies that prompted the south to designate itself as separate nation from the north. A lot of accusations were hurled. In particular the northern politicians and businessmen resented that the southern plantation owners were getting wealthy off the negro slaves while the northern industrialists had to use child labor and sweat shops to get rich. The northerners felt that since the women and children were *free* to leave their jobs (without those pennies, they'd die of starvation), this made the northerns more morally superior. And justified them imposing extra taxes and levies upon the southerners. The northerners were also placing import taxes on goods which the southerners could have otherwise purchased for less than the northerners were selling the factory goods for.

So the southerners decided to go their own way, so they could import goods for less money.

There's so much about our american history that we were never taught in school. There's a reason we weren't told the truth.
