"Earth in Upheaval" & "Worlds in Collision" are books by Immanuel Velikovsky that got me interested in astronomy.
Having driven cross-continent seven times, and explored mountains and forests, cliffs, caverns, canyons, dry riverbeds, and dry lakebeds... I can see there's been a whole helluva lot of upheaval on this planet.
Ancient documents re-printed by Velikovsky and others - as well as layers upon layers of archaeological digs of ancient cities - plus the huge sinkholes and craters in the moon and on earth - all prove that this planet Earth has been through hell.
Global catastrophes beginning around 3600 B.C. included earthquakes, water deluge, meteor hits, volcanic eruptions, lava flows, mountain upheavals, entire oceans spilling out, whales being dumped in Vermont and Quebec, and mountains of bones piled high from Alaska to Siberia is undeniable proof. The most recent ice age was brought about by extreme high followed by extreme cold. Evidence proves the most recent ice age began about 3600 B.C.
The tar pits of La Brea near L.A. has saber tooth tiger skeletons, hippopotamus bones, as well as a variety of remains from neolitic humans UNDER the bones of the extinct animals!
So when I hear about a huge star appearing or a large planet coming closer... I listen close.
